Great Time At the School Christmas Concert

My son is a 5th grader this year, and all the 5th graders have the option of being in either the band or choir.  Well, my son chose the band and selected to play the trombone as his instrument.

I’ve heard my son practice, and although he has definitely improved, I didn’t expect much from the concert!  Boy was I wrong!  Yeah, there were a few off sounds from the group occasionally, but overall it was great.

This may be one of the first concerts where I actually enjoyed it thoroughly!  And unlike past times, I actually enjoyed all of the kids in the group, not just mine!?!  I actually looked at both of the music teachers (a man and woman), and admired their work!

I can honestly say that I was saddened by the fact that the concert ended!  Of all my expectations, this was quite the surprise!

At first, I though that I was just being a proud dad, and listening with dad ears.  But we got my wife’s parent to come to the event too.  And both of them said it was a great concert too, especially considering how new the kids were to playing the instruments!

Unlike the grade school talent show, this event was only open to parents and family members.  The building was packed, and the show was awesome!  My one regret was that I had to leave instead of hearing the 5th grade choir sing too.  I really wonder if there were as good as the band, I have a feeling that they most likely were!

Have you ever been surprised by a free event that just blown you away?

  1. I remembering listening to our first school recital and it was more like a bunch of random sounds. Strangling geese would have been more melodic. Your son and his teachers must be very talented.

    • I think he had a ball with the trombone! It’s very unusual and distinct in the way you play it. Heck, even I think it would be fun to try!

    • Yeah, it’s funny how what would be considered bad sounds change once your a dad. If your kid ups their heart into it, it magically sounds better to you…

  2. Our 5th grade band was also pretty awesome. That’s great that these school programs go from being for the kids to actually good on their own merits.

  3. I have definitely been to free events and concerts that have just blown me away. Some people really just strive for excellence, and it shows!!!!

I’m sure you were being a proud dad as well as a music enthusiast.

  4. Where did my comment go?? I am losing my mind I tell you.

Anyway, what a wonderful story! I have had a hard time sitting through performances sometimes, but that is because I have a hard time paying attention. However, the holiday choir concert at my kid’s middle school last year was just wonderful. They also included parents too who had their own choir and it was just a perfect way to start the holiday season.

Music is a wonderful thing. I just don’t have one ounce of musical talent, and I envy those who do.
