Superbowl XLV Win, Packers Had An Awesome Game!

February 7th, 2011
Packers win

Packers win

Part of my family is from the Pittsburg area (although we don’t live in Pennsylvania now), so I’ve been a Pittsburg fan as long as I can remember.

But even I was rooting for the Packers (Packers won 31-25)!  It’s great to see the old 2nd oldest franchise team in the league back on top!  The Packers have such a rich football history, that it’s great to see them as contenders again.  But what was amazing for me was Aaron Rodger’s vision of winning the super bowl.  Through out the season he was constantly doing the motion of putting on a championship belt every time a touchdown happened (or so it seemed).

The team fought injuries throughout, including the loss of Donald Driver in the 1st half of the Superbowl.  But it wasn’t enough to stop the Packers on their path to victory!

Rodgers was hit or knocked down more that 16 times, but that wasn’t enough to stop him!  He had suffered multiple concussions throughout the session, but even that wasn’t enough to stop him.  His unwavering belief and efforts was truly amazing!

Throughout the game, I only saw Aaron make 1 small error on a bad throw.  Other than that throw, he played a perfect game.

So I now believe in believing!  Rodgers believed that his team was destined to win the Superbowl, and that’s exactly what they did!  How often does that happen, where a team or a person states that we’re the ones and that they will win it all?  But then actually backup what they say by actually winning?!

I don’t know what type of person Aaron Rodgers is in person, but from a performance standpoint, he truly impressive!

MR Cache 2011 Feb 6, Ice Storm Edition

February 6th, 2011

West Winds Blow

While I’ve been through some freezing rain storms before, never have I experienced something like this before (at least as an adult).  Quite literally, my driveway was (and currently is) a 3 to 4 inch slab of ice!

I had to use both salt and sand on my driveway so my kids wouldn’t slip and bonk their heads!

My car was so badly frozen, that I had to get a wrench and chip away the ice on the door seams of my car just to open the passenger side (this side was less thick.  I then started the engine and let it run for 10 minutes, just so I could have a chance to get the ice off of my windshield.

I’m constantly amazed how I think I know my surroundings well, and boom, something blows me away…

My Favorite Reads of the Week:

Everyday Tips and Thoughts:  Winter Storm Preparation Tips  – I like this post because these are great tips and they go well my the topic of my weekly review “Ice Storm”.  I also like that between the lines you get a taste of what it is to live where Kris lives and how they overcome these challenges.

Budgeting in The Fun Stuff:  Cheap and Easy Corn Souffle  – My mouth is watering, what a great looking recipe!  I’m always looking out for easy things to make that a simple guy like me can make.

Invest it Wisely:  Heating with Body Heat the Future of Frugality?  – This is just a plain outright cool article (even if it’s a guest post).  I love articles like this, plus I’m a sucker for any Matrix related pics!

Squirrelers:  Stock Returns by Month: Interesting Historical Trends  – What a great bar charts on the typical returns per month.  This might be a good guideline for investing in a normal average year.

Watson, Inc:  Surprising Trend In Mortgage Defaults  – Shawn once again was able to surprise me with the fact that he discovered about strategic defaults predicted to be higher than they were in 2010.  This is just wrong, I wish people weren’t so selfish!

Conclusion:

Another busy weekend, even though it was challenging, I’ve decided to focus on the great times I had with my son, it really made me glad that I’m a lucky dad with a great son (and daughter too).

Family Time Comes First

February 5th, 2011

I’ve downloaded some podcast and audacity software, and while I tinkered with it for a bit, I didn’t get a chance to really run with it. It’s now 11:10pm Friday night and my daughter has already gone to sleep. I work in the room next to hers, so I don’t want to do a podcast tonight.

Dad and son (not us)

Family Time Comes First

My son and I have been doing a lot of stuff together lately.  From shopping for Legos (with his allowance money), to playing video games on the old XBox (my favorite).  He’s at a delicate stage where I know I don’t have much time with him, since he is already starting to hang with his friends more and more.  So I need to take advantage of when he want so hang out with dad and do so, this time is more valuable to me than any other I’ve experienced before…

I think if I were in my 20s, I might not realize or have the insight as to how valuable this time really is.  We only get one shot at experiencing our kid’s childhood, so I believe that we should make the most of it.

Slipping Into the Past

Today as I was playing my son’s XBox game (Midtown Madness?) with him, I felt myself slipping into an earlier teenage age.  It was almost like I was playing video games with my old neighborhood buddies when I was 10.  It was a very liberating experience, where all the stresses of adult life disappeared for a half an hour of time.  Plus I could tell that my son enjoyed the time we played too.

I sometimes wonder if it’s wise of me to slip out of the adult parent role and act like a good friend to my son as I do sometimes (rarely though).  I have a feeling that this will happen more and more frequently as he ages.

It’s kind of strange because my son is very similar in appearance and thought process as I was as a child, so it’s almost like having a younger version of me I’m hanging with.  Of course he is different, with different tastes, but close enough.

Pictures Need to Be Take More Often

I don’t know if it’s because I’m lazy or absent-minded, but I need to use my cell phone to take more pictures of times like these, and of course videos.

After this weekend, I now realize that I need to shift my family time on my quest to improve myself higher in my life priorities.

Now I look forward to spending time with my daughter in dad and daughter night out again!

Healthy Life Journal, A Slow Start

February 4th, 2011

I had planned on starting my weight loss journal,( now call Healthy Life Journal) on Feb. 1…  But the ice storm kept me at home these past few days, with my car frozen shut (this is a first for me, very funny).  Luckily I was able to get a few things before the storm hit, so I have started the diet (sort of).

So far, the items I bought to start the diet for the journal are as follows:

  • eggs (the perfect source of protein)
  • cheese strips
  • pepper jack cheese slices
  • cottage cheese

I’ve been eating the cheese at lunch, but the other meals I have been eating regular food around the house.  So while this isn’t effective from a weight-loss standpoint, it’s still a start.

I’ve only exercised 1 day, keeping it simple 10 pushups, 10 situps and 10 leg bends?  And of course breaking my back trying to break up the ice in my driveway and on my car!

In previous years, I would have become discouraged from the weather and thought it must not be meant to be, or my luck was bad…  Either way, I would give up on the effort, but not this year!

I now believe that you have to keep plowing through the barriers and bottlenecks encountered along the way!  So while I’m a little bummed, I realize that there is no master scheme to have me stop, things just happen, and my success on my little programs depend on me pushing through the muck!

Have a great weekend, hopefully I’ll have more next Friday!!!

Unrest In Egypt, Is It Any Of Our Business?

February 3rd, 2011
Egypt Map

Egypt Map

There are protesters in Egypt, but do we really have any right to voice our opinion?

As far as I can tell the protests are about corruption, poverty and other issues?  It took me a few days after the protest began to learn the causes, along with many journalists.

So now that the president said that he wouldn’t rerun (after 30 years as president) and that changes would be made to the process, why are people still out in the streets protesting, disrupting their fragile economy basically making themselves weaker?

Watching TV, I’ve seen a few hundred protesters at certain location, but I know that there are thousands from what the journalist say.

But why continue?  It seems like they won, the looting should stop and the businesses and employment that feed families should be able to re-start trying to get life back on track again…

Since the protests are still continuing, kids aren’t getting feed, and families are suffering!  So this has now enabled a backlash from the people against the protesters.  This backlash group called “Mubarak supporters” are said to be larger that the protest groups, and they aren’t happy.  So now the groups are battling each other.

To me, it seems like the protest created change and that enough is enough… unless they don’t really want a democracy and are being fueled by religious zealots?  Perhaps this is an attempt to overthrow the entire democratic process, perhaps setting up a government that is more similar to the Iranian government?

I admit, I don’t know who the backers of what is really going on over there are, but I don’t think our government shouldn’t be voicing our opinion, and telling the egyptian authorities what to do.  It’s their country and based on the rise of the “Mubarak supporters”, maybe we should measure twice and cut once before making demands of an ally?

Afterall, I don’t hear the French or German governments telling the Egyptians how to think and what to do.  Perhaps this is the reason that we Americans are often viewed as being arrogant?  I think we need to butt out and realize that what is happening is really none of our business, and that by our stepping in, both side will hate us in the end.

I find it ironic, that when Iran had demonstrators and protesters, we sat back and clammed up, but for an Ally, we had to put our two cents in…

I don’t know what going to happen, and I wish the Egyptian people the very best!  The thing is they are going to come to a conclusion without us putting demands on the egyptian government or people.

What do you think?  If you were an ally would you appreciate that the US is on the other side?  Wouldn’t that make you upset?
