Thinking Before Paying To Save Money

March 11th, 2011

All to often, we don’t really think before paying  for our purchases!

I’ve been guilty of this too!  I use to get a bill in the mail and just write a check and mail it in.  But today, I’m here to tell you that this is not the best way to go about paying bills, and I’m going to explain a better approach towards your bills.

Thinking Before Paying

When a bill comes in, you should ask yourself “Is this bill for the best service and price for this particular service or purchase?”

A great example would be bills from insurance companies.  Every few years, you should go shopping for a cheaper price for your various insurance needs!  We routinely jump to different car insurance companies.  This saves us hundreds of dollars versus just sticking to one insurance company.

We do this because  most insurance companies know that you don’t want to go through the aggravation of switching companies, since it’s a bit of a pain!  So over the years they raise the fees on you more and more, effectively milking you for all they can.

I actually hate to change car insurance companies, but doing so will save me hundreds of dollars… so I do it anyway!

After a while, you kind of get familiar with the process and it does get easier each time you do this rotation!

Charging To Save Money

First let me start off by saying that I pay my credit cards in full each month.  Okay with that out-of-the-way, when possible, I like to charge expensive bills to my credit card(s) as much as I can!

Why?

I only have reward credit cards, so this give me an instant discount on the purchase price whenever I use it!  While 1% or 2% isn’t a huge discount on the cost of the product (or service), every little bit helps.

If you put some thought into it, you should use certain credit cards for certain purchases.  I say this because some credit cards provide higher reward points for certain types of purchases.

Thinking Outside of the Box

  • First, do you really need to make that purchase?  Why not try to find alternatives or try repairing the item that you are thinking about replacing?
  • Next, can you buy used (ex. cars), that could save you some big buck on high ticket items like automobiles!
  • Have you check out freecycle.org?  This is a no brainer if you are aware of the site’s existence.
  • Check out eBay, Craigslist and other online sites for deals.
  • Can you borrow the item (like an edger) from a neighbor, family or friends.  Doing this is especially good from a tool to accomplish something that is needed very infrequently (again, the edger is a perfect example).
  • Can you use your credit card reward point for the purchase?
  • Buy the item at deep discounts or when special are going on.
  • Haggle if possible…  I couldn’t hurt!

I see so many friends buying at the wrong time of the season (don’t go coat shopping at the start of winter) and on things that aren’t really necessary.

I would advise mulling over a purchasing decision on something you want to buy for at least 1 week if possible.  During this mulling week, try to think of ways you can get it for free, or reduce the cost of the item.  You’d be surprise what solutions you can come up with or comes your way.

Neighbors Buying and Sharing

March 10th, 2011
Teamwork

Teamwork

Occasionally, I like to through out ideas for saving or making money, and come up with experiments (for an example check out my Lunch Experiment)!

So my idea for today (actually I’ve been thinking about this for years), is to have a Neighborhood purchase program for rarely used things, then have the neighbors share those certain rarely used tools!

So let’s say that you have 10 neighbors, and each month they each pitch in $10.  Well, after 2 months time the neighborhood could purchase a edger.  Then 3 months later after the purchase of the edger, they could purchase a pressure washer.

Each purchase would be kept on 1 of the neighbor’s house and the entire neighborhood could all borrow the tool/item!

The beauty is that it would be cheaper than renting the item, the entire neighborhood would look better because all the neighbors should want to use the tools.  This desire to use the tools would mean that their properties all look nicer…

Maybe after 1 year, the payments to the neighborhood kitty could be decreased to $5 a month instead of $10 a month.

Now one might wonder “But what if one of the machines/tools that the neighbors purchased broke”?  Well good question and the answer would be that the money collected from everybody would have to be used to repair the tool.  Unless someone in your group was good at repairing things already.

Why I think this would be a good idea is because mostly the tools I described above, sit in the corner of the garage taking up space doing nothing…

Another side benefit would be that the sharing of tools would be an opportunity to talk to your neighbors!  This might create a more socially health community!

Enjoy Time With Your Kids

March 9th, 2011

Do you take advantage of situations to enjoy time with your kids?

Father and Son

Hanging with my Son

Every Tuesday, my daughter has gymnastic classes, where my wife picks up my daughter right when school lets out and drives her to a different city for her class.  While my wife is going through this routine, my son rides the bus home, while I race from work to beat him to the house.

Once my son arrives home, we originally would wait until my wife called to determine what to do about dinner.  My daughter’s class would not let out until 6:30pm.  So, during the 2 1/2 hour that my son and I would be at home alone together, he would do his homework.  If he didn’t have any homework, he would veg out watching TV, or occasionally we would play video games (this is of course cool too).  This was our routine for a few weeks…

In the past, I would enjoy time with my kids by taking them out for special occasions.  For example, my daughter and I would occasionally have a Daddy and Daughter Day

Then recently, it hit me as I thought to myself: “Why am I letting this alone time with my son go to waste?“.  So last week, we went up to Toys-r-us to check out bikes, then we went out to eat at a Chinese restaurant.

Ironically, earlier I had decided to create a spending budget where I would make sure I spend money on things for myself.  While I missed my goal a little bit with this activity (since it’s for my son too) it’s close enough to my initial goal.  Plus, it will enable us to bond more closely and do some cool things in the process!

Some of my favorite memories of my grandfather were the times when only he and I would go to some of his “Greasy Spoon” restaurants (as my grandmother would call them), and just talk and hang out.   Back then, I was my son’s age (or perhaps a year younger), and I still fondly remember those times together.

So anyhow, I determined that this will be a great way to enjoy time with my son… at least until something disrupts this pattern.

So what did we do today?

Since last week we went to my favorite Chinese restaurant, I let my son choose the restaurant.  The restaurant he picked: “Steak and Shake”, is a cool hamburger joint that’s actually tries to look like one of those “Greasy Spoon” type places that my grandfather would take me to.  How’s that for an irony?

After our quick meal, I know we still had time to burn, so we went to Best Buy, but just to see what is new and exciting…  While there we looked at Apple iPhones, android phone, Apple iPad, laptops, TVs and of course Nintendo DS games.  The 3D TVs were much cooler than either of us expected.  We also learned that the 3D TV can be switch to a 2D mode (I think they called it that) so the TV was just like any regular HDTV.  The iPads were very cool, much lighter than I imagined!

All in all we had a great time, and it was a great “Enjoy Time with your Kids” moment!

If you have kids, do you slice out time to “Enjoy Time With Your Kids” too?  We had a great day and will be doing similar activities every Tuesday from now on…

Wealth Tip #8: Believe Your Way To Wealth

March 8th, 2011

Believe Your Way To Wealth

I remember reading “The Millionaire Next Door”, and Stanley (the author) stated that the majority of those that are very rich “Believe”.

At the time, I wondered what exactly he meant and if it was one religion, and which one.

Well, after dwelling deeper into that “Believe” rabbit hole, I’ve since learned that Believing (meaning believing in a higher power) also means believing that you will become wealthy!

Those that believe that they are to be wealthy, prepare by using tools such as spreadsheets, accountants and other cognitive tools to help visualize the path to riches.

So as for “Belief” associated with one particular religion, it doesn’t really matter.   In fact, to conclude so would be a spurious relation at best.  The key is have passion and believe that you are predestined to be wealthy.

It does help to think that your god or higher power wants you to be rich and that it is one of your objectives assigned to you from your god (or higher power).

So an intense (quest like) focus on becoming wealthy help you accomplish this feat!  Plus, from what I read, others that are rich may help you along your way in the form of connection, encouragement, (lending) money and friendship in general.

This makes perfect sense if you think about the way we accomplish every other goal in life.  When we learn how to ___________ (ride a bike, swim, read, etc), it take focus and determination.  But how often do we wake up with that type same type of focus on how to make money daily?

Granted riding a bike takes a day or two at best, while becoming wealthy takes years or tens of years, so the focus period is much longer but still similar!

Okay, so we just believe that we will be wealthy and it will be so…  is it really that easy?

Yes and No, you need to believe that it’s that easy, but at the same time you’ll have to put in some effort to figure ways to make that money, save that money and invest that money.

Is it still possible to become wealthy without believing?

Of course, but you might get their quicker, be more wealthy, and have more fun all around if you focus on the activity of becoming wealthy…

What do you think?  Does it make sense that focusing and working on becoming wealthy will improve your odds of really becoming wealthy?

15 Advantages of Blogging

March 7th, 2011

After blogging for almost a year and a half, I’ve come to realize that I’m not the same person I was when I started blogging.

It took a while, kind of like the way a blacksmith in a past times would hammer away at a sword blade, continuing to harden the metal, while also shaping the edge of the blade.  Blogging has had that type of effect on me!  I can tell that blogging has sharpened both my communications skills and my writing abilities!

Back when I started, word were difficult to write down, and I guess you could say that I was a writing weakling.  While writing still isn’t my strong point, I have strengthened this ability, much like a weight lifter would improve their muscle tone by lifting weight day in and day out.

Advantages of Blogging

  1. I can now write better than I have ever before,
  2. My sense of organization have improved vastly!
  3. My patience for the tedious tasks done has also improved vastly.
  4. I’m not afraid to seem pretentious by using words that are not typically used day in and day out.
  5. I’m no longer intimidated by others that have similar but much larger blogs.
  6. I learn something new almost daily (and sometimes it seems like hourly).
  7. I’ve met some great people online, and learned to respect other intelligent opinions too.
  8. I make enough money to support my blogging hobby.
  9. I’ve become a more trusting and friendlier person.
  10. I’ve learned to have more patience with my family and especially my son and daughter.
  11. I’ve learned to work for fun
  12. I’ve learned to get along with less sleep (as I type this at 1:00am)
  13. I’m able to explore the hidden, creative side of my being, especially with experiments!
  14. I’ve learned not to be so defensive, and let attacks on me roll off of my shoulders.
  15. I’ve learned to create pillar posts (like my recent Disney World post).

As long as you don’t let blogging run your life, the above advantage of blogging are great!
