Roth IRA Benefits for Kids

July 26th, 2011

Because of  the wonderful Roth IRA benefits for kids, once my kids start to earn some income (aka get a job), I’m going to have them open a Roth IRA.  A small problem is that currently my kids are ages 7 and 11, so I many have to come up with a clever way for them to earn some money!

Unfortunately, I can’t afford to put the maximum allowed ($5,000 each) in both of their future Roth IRA accounts, at least without severely affecting the growth of my own net worth.  So instead, I intend to put one or two thousand in each of their accounts per year.  Of course, it depends on my own future income stream.

What Are Some Roth IRA Benefits For Kids?

  1. Money that is added to a Roth IRA will grow tax-free!
  2. Money that is contributed to a Roth IRA can be taken out any time both tax and penalty free.  Note, the earnings on the contributed money cannot be taken out without a incurring a 10% penalty and income tax on the earnings.
  3. If you put the money in stocks that yield dividends, the dividends also will be tax free!
  4. You can contributed the money from your account, but that amount you add need to be what they earned or less for that given year.
  5. You can take $10,000 of earning out for purchasing a home if you are a first time home buyer and qualify under certain rules!

The benefits listed above are powerful reasons to consider creating a Roth IRA for kids, but the real hidden advantage is that contributing to a Roth IRA starts a family tradition and habit for your kids!  If have your child go though the process with you every year, hopefully they will learn that the contribution process is just a normal, annual activity!  This can be a powerful tool for wealth creation for them.  Hopefully they will realize that you are paying into their Roth IRA for they retirement someday, so hopefully they will think twice before withdrawing it.

While you can use the Roth IRA for college expenses too, I prefer not to do this since the earning will be taxes (although the 10% penalty is waived for such expenses).  That said, they can still use the contributions from the Roth IRA tax and penalty free (but then again they can use the contributions for anything tax and penalty free).  Personally, I prefer to use a 529 plan.  The 529 vs Roth IRA route to save for college really depends on how much you make and is a topic that I’ll blog about in the future.

Another non-financial benefit is that this give your child exposure to stocks and other investments.  Is there a better way to learn about investments other than getting your hands dirty doing it?  I think this could be a great learning tool for them.

Well, you now know the benefits of a Roth IRA for kids!  If  you have any question please leave them in the comment section below or email me (via my contact page).

Wishing you the best,

Boating Birthday Party For Kids

July 25th, 2011

In the past, we’ve had kid parties at mini-golf  and other kid places like Chuck E Cheese’s.  This year we decided to try something different!

Boating Party Idea

This year we asked my son what kind of kid’s party he wanted and he said he wanted a Boating Birthday Party.  “Wow, that’s a great idea” I said, while thinking “the only problem is that we don’t own any boats”…

Yeah, we have friends that have both boats and jet skis, but I can’t really tell them, “Okay, my son wants a boating birthday party so I’m going to invite people you don’t know to use your boats and jet skis at this certain lake…, is that cool?“!  That certainly wouldn’t go over well with me, so I can imagine it would go over well with them either…

Luckily my son’s grandfather recently purchased jet skis and since he’s a great guy, he offered to bring over his jet skis and help out with the party.  Next, my wife called her good friend that has a nice newer shine boat and asked if she could bring her kids and come to the party.  The friend said she would do one better and bring their boat for everybody to use too.

Boating

So my son’s boating party had all of the necessary equipment lined up for use.  Since this is the first year trying this, we decided to keep the list of kids that he could invite to a minimum so that we could test the waters so to speak (no pun intended).  So my son picked four of his most solid friends, with such friends, we could have some party fumbles and they wouldn’t really mind.  So we had a great pilot test group of friends for our first boating birthday party.

Notes For The Next Boating Birthday Party

While we were successful at getting the equipment lined up, there were times when all the adults were socializing on the beach.  During this time the kids were bored and wanted beach toys to build castles.  Normally we have such toys, but both my wife and I forgot them this time.

Well, that’s a major mistake because the kids don’t want to listen to adults at a party, so I had to jumped in the car and went out searching for some beach toys for the party.

It took me 20 minutes to locate a store that carried the sand toys and then another 10 minutes to get back to the beach.  While not a party stopper, this was a major miss on our part and something that needs to be considered for any future boating party.

Boating Party Mishaps

No, we didn’t have any accidents or crashes!  But our friends with the boat had to leave early because they had to travel to Virginia that day for a small vacation!  So the kids didn’t get to go tubing in the boat much, but it was still fun for the short time that they were able to.  Big thanks to our friends for coming out and adding to the fun by bring their boat!  This wasn’t expected and was a great treat for the kids.

After our friends had gone, one of the jet skis mysteriously stopped working after we turned it off at the beach!  Oh no, now we were down to one jet ski!  The kids all took two additional turns, then we had to tow the broken jet ski back to the dock to be loaded back onto the trailer.

We were luck that the four friends that he asked to come didn’t complain and just made the most of the time they had out in the lake with the jet skis and boat!

Boating Party Conclusion

We had some rough moments, but overall, the friends had an awesome time (not of they had gone boating before).  Asked if they want to try it again next year, all enthusiastically said “YES”!!!

I think if we didn’t have such family and friends to have the party, we might have been able to rent the jet skis (and maybe even the boat for all I know).  While it might be expensive if you rent them for too long a period, it might not be that bad if you only use them or an hour or two.

I think it would be a blast to run the jet skis on the ocean someday.  Perhaps we’ll rent them when we are on vacation this year…

I’m happy my son and his friends had a great day, life is good!

MR Cache: The Year Is Half Over and Now It’s Time To Get Up And Run!

July 24th, 2011

Weekly Thoughts:

Well, we are past the half-way mark for the year!  I’ve slowed down my accomplishments quite a bit until now.  For some reason I feel that I should really pick things up and start to sprint for the rest of the year.  I’m not sure if it’s the motivational article called “How to Increase Motivation and Succeed” by the Financial Samurai or because I know that I have slowed down and it’s now time to do a full out sprint to the end of the year.

It could be the iPod touch that my son got for his birthday made me realize that the technology world has moved on past the old palm pilots of the past and now is very exciting and friendly!  I have to admit, I really want an iPod touch or Android equivalent!  Since the iPod touch sync up with various email programs, just having it hook to my google calendar would be awesome!

These past few days, I’ve really enjoyed my deck!  I’ve been sitting out under the umbrella in a chair reading Money Magazine and Technical books.  It’s so hot that it feels like I’m on vacation, and that’s wonderful!  Perhaps I could do both, speed up with my work and still enjoy the outdoors at the same time.

Time to work on the looks of this blog, so here are some blogger articles to read…

Weekly Conclusion

Next week I will be on vacation!  I’m going to try and blog while I’m on vacation, but it might be difficult.  After a cool winter and a wet spring, Summer is just right, albeit a bit hot.  I’m playing around with the idea of starting more online sites, so now it’s time to do some thinking!

Time to get our second wind and starting running like an antelope!

Have a great weekend!

Unique Ways to Save Money on Car Insurance

July 23rd, 2011

Car insurance is a very important requirement and is necessary to have if you are to planning on legally drive on the roads in the United States.  Currently, numerous car insurance schemes from various insurers are available on the market.  Such schemes usually vary according to the insurance company.  Sometimes, such insurance policies are too heavy on our pockets and you soon realize that you are spending too much money on your car insurance.

Good Reason for Car Insurance

Here we are discussing ways to reduce the cost involved:

1. Go with the right company- It is very important to choose a reliable and well-known insurance company for your car insurance.  By choosing a cheaper insurance company, you may think that you are saving some money, but that saved money is swallowed up in some other way or by the other insurance company if you are in an accident and not vigilant.  Therefore, it is best to first compare the deals and ask for free quotes from many carriers and figure the ideal policy for yourself.

2. Choose the correct policy – You can definitely choose a suitable policy by comparing auto insurance quotes online.  You should avoid policies  that demand extra charges for unnecessary coverage options.  You should consider the damage that can happen to your car and health, then choose the appropriate policy.  Make sure you have enough coverage for you medical expenses and the other parties if you cause the accident!

3. Opt for a higher deductible – Though it may not may any sense initially, but when you opt for higher deductibles, you can definitely save a good chuck of your money over a few years.  Now if you know you are a horrible driver (check your records if you have any) then don’t get a high deductible!  But if you are like me, consider getting a deductible as high as $500 or $1,000.

When you sign up, the insurance company will offer you numerous options for deductible.  Though you may choose the lowest option as it may seem beneficial but in reality the higher the deductible the more beneficial it is for you in the form of a lower insurance payment.  You should keep in mind that the deductible significantly influences your premium.  Therefore, when you choose a low deductible, your monthly payment will be significantly higher.  On the other hand,  choosing a higher deductible will significantly reduce the monthly payment and would save you a good amount of money in the end.

4. Opt for additional GAP – First, what is GAP Insurance?  It’s insurance that covers what traditional car insurance doesn’t!  GAP insurance is good if you have an availed loan on your car.  An availed loan covers the actual cash value and the loan amount that is due, in the event of accident, fire and so on.  Insurance companies determine the ACV (Actual Cash Value) of your damaged car at a much lower value than the retail value that you initially bought your car for, and so you would still be left with a huge amount owed towards your loan.  GAP insurance covers this difference.  Sometimes, the GAP insurance provider may also pay your deductible resulting in considerable benefit to you.

5. Search for new deals from insurance companies every year or every few years!  The payment keep creeping upward each year.  So it pays to shop around every so often!  You’d be surprised how much you can save!

6.  Combine Housing and Car Insurance!  If you combine both of these insurance types, the company that provides both will many times give you a special discount.  This makes it a win-win for both you and the insurance company!

Backstabbing Friends – Are They Really Worth It

July 22nd, 2011

During my college days, I lived in a co-ed dorm for a short period of time.  The guys lived on the odd floors and the women lived on the even floors.

At the cafeteria, I kept eating the same time as this friendly and fairly attractive girl that lived in my dorm building did.  After a while of being in the lines at the same time, we started joking around and became friends.  Occasionally, we would even eat together, but this wasn’t an everyday common occurrence since I had a girlfriend and she had a boyfriend.

One day she was almost in tears back at the dorm.  I asked what was wrong and she told me that she was going to flunk a class because she didn’t prepare a report on the movie “Blade Runner” (I think she didn’t read the book or something like that).  So she was desperately looking for someone with a car that could take her to get the video so that she could watch and create a report based off of the video.

Since I felt like we were friends, I told her I could help.  So I drove her to a video store that was 5 miles away.  She picked up the movie and as we were going to the cashier to rent the movie, but the owner said we needed to be a member.  Fine, so I thought I’d sit back and let her become a member.

Well, turns out she didn’t bring her driver’s license and they required a license to get a movie.  I put on my proverbial super hero cape AGAIN and got a membership card.  My “friend” then gave me the money to rent the video.

She thanked me profusely when we got back to the dorm and almost ran to her dorm room to watch the video and write the report.

Time Lapse…  2 or 3 weeks.

I forgot about the video, thinking my “friend” got her boyfriend to drive her to the video store, but he hadn’t and the video store called me wanting their video back.

I try to contact her multiple times, but she didn’t respond and wasn’t around as much.  Eventually I did bump into her and asked her about the video.  She said something lame like she forgot and told me she is moving out of the dorm and into her boyfriend’s house.  I was pissed, and said that I need the video.  She said that she would get it for me before she moved.

A few days later, I came back from classes to my dorm and my roommate asked if a video he found outside leaning against our dorm door was mine.  I looked and it was!  Apparently my “friend” came, realized nobody was in the dorm and leaned it against the door and left… Nice…

So I returned it, and the video store wanted some outrageous money for it being so late.  I was hot about then entire deal and explained the problems I had and walked out never to return (yes I realize that it wasn’t the right thing to do).

After that, I never seen my “friend” again, and I’m guessing she did poorly in the class and dropped out of school entire or transferred.

The point of this story is even though I was being a superhero, I really ended up being a victim.

That was the last time I’ve ever lent anything of value to a friend.  So far, this has worked out quite nicely for me.  I know and heard of other friends going lending thousands and never getting paid back.

You can have a friend like I had (she was fun to be around), but if they are kind of flaky, don’t lend them money or things of value!

Have you even went out of your way to help a friend, only to have them stab you in the back afterwards?
