How I Saved $1190 By Purchasing A Cable Modem

September 20th, 2011

Back in year 1999, I decided to buy internet access through my local city internet service provider.  Back then Time Warner’s RoadRunner service cost around $50 per month, so I instead I opted to go with my local city ISP who with the annual pre-payment brought the cost for ISP service down from $18 to $13 a month.

But my savings came from a calculated decision to buy a Motorola SURFboard cable modem instead of renting one from my local ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Since I have a technology background, I couldn’t for the life of me understand why my ISP sales representative wanted to rent me a cable modem instead that me just going out and purchasing and connecting it myself…

When the ISP wiring technician came out to run my cable, he thought that I was crazy.  I’ve never seen such a bizarre look from a serviceman before.  Even after I told him that I work with computer and networking technology where I work, he still tried to convince me that I should rent the cable modem instead of me buying my own.  Actually it got to a point where I started getting a bit offended, especially when I told him that when my house was built, I went in and wired it with computer networking cable with a small cabling closet down in the basement that my dad and I installed it (very cheaply too). Actually, I got funny looks from him when I told him I wanted my ISP cable wire to run into the basement where my small (more like an enclosed shelf), cabling closet existed.

Based on the response from the ISP technician, I’m sure that the majority of people in my small city started renting cable modem from them.  Obviously, I didn’t cave and told the wiring technician that I would go out and purchase my own cable modem and install it.  After deducting $115 from the savings, it turns out that I saved over $1190 over the past eleven years.  I feel very vindicated!

If you are currently renting your cable modem from your ISP, you might want to consider going out and purchasing one yourself.  My cable modem finally died this week, and I went out and bought a newer Motorola SURFboard (model SB6120).  Last year, I told my neighbors about my experience and they have since went out and bought their own cable modems too.

If you have a friend that’s good with computers and networking, consider getting him or her to help you.  Offer to take them out of lunch, I’m sure you’ll find that the money you spend on lunch is worth it over the long run.  Oh, that reminds me, make sure you plug your cable modem and router into a decent power strip that has a surge protector!  If you have a friend that’s a techie, they can help you with that too.

Well, I hope my story has help you or someone you know save money!  It took me about a year to recoup the cost, but it was all savings after that point!

Good luck if you decided to take the plunge.  If you do make the purchase, leave me a comment below, it would make my day!

Why I Got An American Express Blue Cash Card

September 19th, 2011

I’ve decided that the American Express Blue Cash Card is the ultimate rewards credit card for me!  That is why this is the first credit card that I went out and signed up for online.

After going out to the American Express web site, I came to the conclusion that choosing the card isn’t as simple as I expected!

American Express Blue Cash Card really comes in many different shapes and sizes.  Okay…, not really, they all look like a credit card, but they do have quite an array of plans in the Blue Cash Card program!  It seems the have an option for all types of different consumers, and while this sounds confusing, it’s actually great!  It’s great because you get to optimize your reward plan payout based on the card type that fits you the best.

So after a quick look, the following American Express Blue Cards were the best options for me:

American Express
Blue Cash Everyday:

  • Earn 3% cash back on groceries, 2% at gas stations and department stores, and 1% on all other eligible purchases
  • No rotating categories or enrollment requirements for cash back and no limit on the cash rewards you can earn
  • No annual fee
  • And lastly, Get a $25 Referral Bonus for each friend or family member who is approved for the card

This particular card is nice because it has some great cash back rewards on normal living expenses without the hassle of remembering to activate bonus rewards options every quarter.  I want my credit card to serve me, not me serve my credit card.

Another reason I got an American Express Blue Cash Card, to be quite honest, is that I like the looks of this card!

So now my American Express Blue Cash Card  is now my primary card and both my wife and I have use the same card.  We plan on using it as much as possible to take advantage of the great rewards program!

I think if you look into the American Express Blue Cash benefits, you’ll find that this card is one of the best deals out there too!

Money Reasons – Kids Grow Up Too Quickly

September 18th, 2011

Weekly Thoughts

Well, it’ official, my son is now taller than my wife.  As they were standing next to each other, I noticed that he looked an inch or so taller than my wife.  She wasn’t standing straight up, but once they both did, he still had her by a hair.

Yep, my son is becoming quite a young man!  It seems like he’s getting bigger and stronger by the week anymore.  I’ve come to realize that his weaknesses are really just my weaknesses that he has picked up on.  Now I’m working to change my behavior.  This is no easy task!  So far this year, he has straight As like he did last year.  So what little weaknesses he does have they are minor.

My daughter, while still shorter than my wife by a large margin is getting bigger too, and more beautiful and intelligent every day.  I never known anybody quite like her!  Ever since she was about 1 or 2, you could look in her eyes and see that she’s something special.  At 2 or 3, she seemed unreal to me, to perfect, she has such a presence!  People gravitate to her.

The point of the observations of my kids is that they are growing up quickly, too quickly in fact!  I wanted to do so much with them both, but they are growing up right before my eyes.  Kind of like a weed that grows an inch or so every day.  I really need to spend more time with them before they are out on their own!  Life moves fast when you have kids…

Conclusion:

My son had an awesome soccer game, he was everywhere the ball was, it was amazing, perhaps the best game that I’ve ever seen him play!  I need to start to bring my camcorder to capture these moments!  Same applies with my daughter’s games too, she’s even playing up a level!

Hope everybody had a great weekend!

Rich in the Past or Middle Class in the Present – I Choose the Middle Class

September 17th, 2011

Recently, I went to the Edison and Ford’s summer homes when I was in Florida during vacation.  After touring their homes and getting a feel for how they lived their lives, I started wondering if I would rather live like I do today or live a life similar to one of these great men of the past.

Surprisingly, I choose the present, and here is why:

  • The world is at my disposal because of cheap transportation via the airplanes and airline infrastructure!  It’s relatively cheap to fly today versus in the past.  The trick in the past would be to even finding a flight to even a small fraction of the places airplanes can take us today!
  • I like air conditioning, especially during hot summers like we just recently had!  I can imagine that the folks back then were often pretty sweaty during their summers!
  • I like central heating!  It’s nice have an even flow of heat throughout the house!
  • I like the heater in my car!  Can you imaging driving to work in the winter (especially if live in the North) without a heater?
  • It’s nice to have great inflatable rubber tires!  If I lived in the past, I might get stuck in the ruts in the roads that they had back then, especially when it was snowy.  which brings me to my next point:
  • I like our roads and the fact that they are plowed when it snows!
  • Credit and credit cards (like the Chase Freedom credit cards)!  Now we too have access to credit like the rich of yesteryear had.  While some complain about available credit, at one time the middle class didn’t have such opportunities.  Credit is just a tool,  what you do with that tool is up to you.
  • Modern medicine is huge!  The rich back in the days of yesteryear didn’t have it nearly as good as we do with respect to medical treatments!
  • Technology, yes as much as I state that we are losing jobs to technology, I still love it!  It’s amazing what we can do today versus yesterday.  Shoot, I’m not even sure if I can write a paper letter more than a page long anymore.  Think about when was the last time you wrote a real multi-page letter to someone where the letter was more than an invitation to an party?  Do I even have to mention cell phones, let alone a smart cell phone?
  • I love indoor plumbing.  Oh they has some systems back then (think  outhouses), but still, we have it better.
  • And then there are all of the recreational activities!  boating (not the slow boring type of the past either), jetskiing, snowmobiling, affordable snow skiing, parasailing, and the list goes on and on!
  • And finally, the Internet!  Yes this is a part of technology, but it’s so much more than that!  Currently, we surf the web, email each other, play games, blog, watch movies, listen to music, educate ourselves, fix things via information googled on the internet, socialize, etc…  The internet  just continues to snowball into bigger and more incredible things.

Actually the Internet really tips the scale!  I would bet that we of the here-and-now have been exposed (via the internet) to twice as much as the people in the middle classes of Edison and Ford’s era!

As much as the media complains about how bad the middle class has it today, I wouldn’t switch places with someone that was rich just 40 years ago, let alone over 100 years ago!

Sometimes we need to sit down, look around, and realize how incredible we really have it!

I say enjoy the here-and-now before it has come-and-gone!

So here is to a great weekend, now it’s time to enjoy it!

Becoming Rich or Successful By Communicating Selectively and Effectively

September 16th, 2011

As some of you may know, in addition to sharing my story and progress (see my gain in Net Worth article), one of the big reasons I blog is to improve my communication and thinking skills.  Lately, I believe both of these two skills have jelled to enable me to see more about my life as an employee than it had in the past with respect to my career as an employee.

Are You Brilliant But Unknown?

Have you noticed that a lot of your ideas are all around you at work, but you still not a director or higher yet?

Well it could be that you ideas are being credited to others around you.  I use to be open with my thoughts on particular problems and would speak about my solutions to any peer or friend that was within earshot.  Surprisingly (or perhaps naively), I never communicated those ideas to my bosses and their bosses…

A few years back I remember telling my boss a brilliant idea that I had that would save the company hundreds of thousand of dollars each year.  The idea was unique and I’m quite sure that it was all mine.  I remember being excited about the idea and upon thinking of it, immediately requested a meeting with my boss (at that time) to discuss the idea.  We had the meeting, and while he didn’t shoot it down, he was reserved and said he would look into it.

Time passes and a few month later, my boss tells the my department, this brilliant idea at a departmental meeting, and gives credit to a peer that was a good buddy of his.  More time passes, and he gets the credit (via corporate awards) entirely with no mention of me (or even his buddy that he mistakenly gave the idea credit to).

Yeah, I was bitter, but you want to know something…  It was entirely my fault for not gaining the credit that I should have had!

Why?

First, I knew of the reputation that my former boss had and knew that I shouldn’t have told him the idea in private meeting (what was I thinking?).  Telling my boss alone, was like putting both a shark and a seal in the same SeaWorld aquarium…  (poor seal…)

Second, I didn’t write-up the idea in a written proposal and email it to a few of the big bosses!  Such an action could help your idea get recognized by someone in a higher management position, or perhaps you might start to develop a friendship with one of them.

Third, I didn’t re-enforce the idea by being more social with management.  After sending the proposal, I should have tried to meet with the few managers to point out the strengths of my idea and answer any questions about the proposal.  I could have even scheduled a meeting as a friendly Q & A (question and answer) session.

Forth (and this may be the most important), I should have tried to socialize more with management!  I’ve seen many a lesser peer get promoted faster than I have because they are a golfing, card playing, or sport watching buddy with management.  It’s human nature to try to surround yourself with people who like you and you like too.  This is one of my biggest problems over my career, and is totally my fault (I’ve had opportunities).  Remember, your managers are still just people…

Believe it or not, the same principals apply to becoming rich too!  I’ve discussed these ideas with a few of my friends that are millionaires, and they say the same communication skills apply to gaining business (becoming rich), too.  Of course upper management in their case are clientss, and other business connections.  Obviously, they aren’t going to share their ideas either, instead they are going to present products for their business clients to buy…

I hope this little insight helps those suck in a dead end job or those just starting out.  If you want to hear specific stories (I have plenty), email or comment below and I’ll introduce some in future articles.

Bests to you,

MR
