I think your system works, so it’s great. My mom couldn’t make up her mind on allowances, so I think if I ever have a kid, Mr. BFS and I will have to figure it out on the fly

A good allowance system is one that fits your family’s values and works for your kids. Every family is different. Sounds like you have a great system that is working for your family!

I do bonuses for academic achievements, but I don’t do it for sports anymore. That is a good idea though!

We are the same with food and clothes, Toys have to be paid with their allowance.

Just for the record, as a child, I got an allowance, but I had to work for it, and I turned out fine

you have a good plan, and it sounds like there are some serious plusses…

our kids have to work for their allowances, but we give them ample opportunity to earn.. they can earn up to $2/day for helping with chores and bonuses for sports and academic achievements.. and they still get the same benefits that you mention.

i tell them that i will buy them food and clothes, and anything beyond that– they have to budget for.

That’s great that your son is keeping track of his money! Did you know that there are also websites online that can help him do that, and maybe have some fun while budgeting, too? One that comes to mind is KidsCash (www.kidsca.sh). My kids have been using it to save up for new videogames and it’s been working out really well.

Sounds like a successful plan. More people need to be intentional with raising their children, if you ask me.
