MR Cache: Making Time For Kids!

May 1st, 2011

Weekly Thoughts:

This past Saturday, my daughter had too much going on!  She went to both a birthday party and the ballet.  After the ballet, my wife and daughter went out to eat somewhere relatively fancy too.

All in all, it was a memorable experience for my daughter and wife as they did all of these activities… but what about our son?

He lucked out too, my dad called and we decided to all go play golf.  As usual, we all enjoyed the activity!  Next my dad, son and I went to a favorite local restaurant.

After my dad drove us back home, my son went next door and helped neighbors with spreading  mulch, while I mowed at home.

Next, I told him that we needed to go to dinner, so I gave him three choices to choose from.  He chose “Steak and Shake”, the funny thing is that I know that this is one of his favorite restaurants, and that he would pick that instantly.

So both kids had a great Saturday.  Sometimes, it’s got to be all about them :)

MR Cache 2011, Jan 2 – A New Start

January 2nd, 2011

A New Start

This year (2011) will be a bit different that previous years!  In previous years I’ve always drunk the listing the ”New Year’s Resolutions” koolaid, but I’m not going to do that this particular year.

I think 2011 will be much better than 2010, call it a gut feeling…  So far it has started out with a break  from the cold weather for a spell (or at least this past weekend).  I’m already starting on new projects, the first being reinstalling the software on my laptop including the operating system.  You see I got a computer virus last year, and while I was able to clean it up, some of the system files were corrupted.  I could have manually replaced the file, but sometimes it’s better for performance reasons to start with a clean slate!

So since it’s already 3:00am, I’m just going to go with a brief, loose format for few of sites I visited last week:

Everyday Tips and Thoughts:  10 Lessons Learned in 2010 - These lessons are spot on and a great read!  There is wonderful advice directly from experiences gained in 2010!  This a must read!  See if you agree with Kris!

Budgeting in the Fun Stuff:  Don’t You Want to Retire ASAP? -  BIFS reminds us that for her (and me), there are better ways to spend your life instead of just working.  For me personally, it would be traveling, but check out BIFS’s list, it’s very well thought out and impressive!

Money Cone: Unconventional Income From Uncommon Stocks – Royalty Trusts – Great article on “Royalty Trusts”!  I’ve followed these for a while, but haven’t taken the plunge yet.  Money Cone present a great argument as to why they should be considered!

Len Penzo:  The Penner Awards: The 10 Craziest Money Blunders of 2010  - A very funny list of happenings in 2010.  I also learn not to see “Little Fockers” (since I noticed that Len and I have similar taste in movies, if Len says don’t go, I don’t go!).  This was a great list worth checking out!

Consumerism CommentaryWhat Is Financial Independence? - Flexo opens up the question and make you think about how much you will really need not to mention a focus on passive income!

EDayTipsThought:  Paypal Email Scam  – Kris talks the nefarious hacking activity commonly know as Phishing.  But Kris also reveals an email to forward such Paypal phishing attempt to!  Hurray for Kris, nice job on this!

LazyManandMoney.com:  – Goals for 2011 - Some good goals, and especially noteworthy is his estimates on growth of his online ventures!

Best 2011 Resolutions

The following are 3 of my favorite 2011 reads for the coming year.  There are plenty of great other resolutions, but these 3 in particular struck a chord with me.

Well Heeled Blog2011 Goals: Make Money, Save Money, Get Fit & Enjoy Life - What I really like about this particular set of Resolutions was how exact the list was, not to mention that it was very uplifting and inspirational!  I came away from this list feeling refreshed!

Financial Samurai:  Financial Samurai Goals And Resolutions for 2011 - I said my goals this year is to becoming super, but my level of super can’t touch Sam’s level!  Check out his incredible list of resolutions, and I think you will agree!

First Gen AmericanNew Years Goals for Anyone - Sandy takes a different approach with her goes and explains her philosophy!  She had me at “1. Visit 1 new place this year”!

I hope you enjoyed my quick list!  There are many other great post I would have included if I had time, but alas…  I’m sleepy.

Hope your New Year is starting out great!

MR Cache 2010, Dec 18 – Perfect Christmas Lights

December 19th, 2010

Weekly Thoughts:

The snow and the unusually high number of houses with Christmas lights, the outside aesthetics has been a thing of beauty!  The Christmas lights shining thought the snow covering bushes and trees made practically every house that had Christmas decorations out look like something out of a classic Christmas movie!

This Saturday evening as I left for dinner, I had to stop and just walk around the driveway admiring all the beautifully light houses along the street.  I usually don’t do this, but everything looks so spectacular, I couldn’t resist!  Plus the brisk chill in the air made me think how pure and crisp the air was.  I was a great experience and I’m honestly thinking about walking around the neighborhood just to enjoy the experience.

First Gen American: Is Uncle Sam the New Bank of Mom and Dad? – I was honored to be mentioned in such a well wrote out article!  Sandy L. provides a great time line as to when benefits-a-plenty has come into the American public program.  I was impressed with the well throughout research Sandy put into the article!  It was like reading a post from time magazine!  Excellent read!

Len Penzo: Gee, Thanks: 4 Presumptuous Gifts That Can Strain A Budget – Some real nightmares here!  I would hate for someone to pick an automobile for me, so I totally agree that those “car as a present” commercials suck.  I can see it now Christmas day, and my wife gets me a “purple minivan”!  Oh joy!!!

Squirellers.com: Unforgettable, Funny Holiday Gifts that were Given as Real Presents – Very funny and cheap presents!  A good chuckle on most of these!

Watson Inc: Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears Round Up and Uncommon Money News Looks and the way a person acts is sometimes deceiving!  Jessica and Britney are going extremely well, even though they don’t sing as much as they use to.

My Favorite Post from MoneyReasons.com for the Week:

This week, my favorite post was Christmas Experiences During The Great Depression!  This was a post that was wrote from the heart and to date one of my best posts!  It involved a personal tragedy to my grandmother when she was a child and how she overcame the childhood experience to make Christmas a special time for her children and grandchildren.

Closing Thoughts:

Where I live it truly is beautiful!  This may be the only time that I’d rather live in my city than California or other warmer, ocean front areas.

MR Cache 2010, Dec 11 – Year End Holiday Traditions

December 12th, 2010

Weekly Thoughts:

Wow, this week has been a constant run, I’ve never had such a packed week of holiday activities!  We actually did both our Christmas diner and the cutting of the Christmas tree on the same day!  Talk about hectic…

This will be the last year that I rush all of our traditions together.  After all, it’s suppose to be enjoyable, not a chore!

MoneyReasons Weekly Cache 2010, May 9 – Mother's Day

May 9th, 2010

Weekly Cache – 2010, May 9 – Mothers Day

Random Thoughts:

Another Mother’s Day spent on the road visiting our parents.  We took my wife’s parent’s out to lunch, and we took my parents out to dinner.

My wife’s parents recently bought a new house with an above ground swimming pool, they are in the process of getting it ready!  We stopped over to check it out and the kids are very excited about it.

At my parent’s house, they got a new black german shephard.  It’s a beautiful dog.  The dog was timid at first, but it warmed up to the kids, especially my son.  My parents have a hot tub, so the kids got their swimming suits on and got it.  It was cool, because it was 9:30pm and the star were out (my parents live in the country).  No adults went in because the tempature outside was in the 50′s…   The kids had a blast.

My Favorite Top 4 PF Blogger Posts For The Week:

Money FunkThe Mother’s Day Edition - This was a great post by Christine about her financial influence (via her blog) on her mother!  What a great accomplishment!!!  Too often, we are experts in certain subject matters, but are incapable of teaching our family those areas of expertise.  I think it’s great Christine was able to cross that family chasm!!!

Financial Samurai:  Where Did All The Time Go? - The message is solid, but this post is worth it just to hear Sam sing the once very popular Goo Goo Dolls song “Name”.  Sam did a great job with this version, but more importantly, he’s completing the list of goals that he had from the beginning of the year!  Great job Sam!!!

Little House In The Valley:  What Kids Know About Money - Awesome comments by her students about money, but I’m also impressed with Little House’s introduction of money to her students.  My son (9 years old), can already make change faster that I can (but he’s gifted with math), but most of the kids in his class can’t make change in their head.  Such an money introduction would be good for her class, kudos to you Little House!

Eventual MillionaireHow to Raise Your Kids to Be Entrepreneurs - This is a great video that Jaime found!  I personally relate to this since there are many small business owners in my family.  While I’m not exactly pushing my kids to be Entrepreneurs, at one time in the past I’ve started an eBay business involving my son, and even tried to get him to start his own blog (with my help, of course).

My Favorite Post from Money Reasons This Week:

Can An Individual Make A Difference At Work, this is my favorite.  This one is different that my typical weekly favorite.  The comments by readers were so thoughtful and well written, that this post was elevated to my favorite for the week sole because of their great comments!  Thanks guys (Blair MacGregor, MoneyCone, Len Penzo, kt, Bret @ Hope to Prosper, Ryan @ Planting Dollars, Everyday Tips and Thoughts).  They provided an extra level of depth and direction!

Closing Thoughts:

Another busy but great weekend!  I continually learn great things from the blogging community!  This week, I submitted an article about overcomming your family history to succeed to tip’d, it was a great experience and I appreciate all those who tipped the article!!! :)

All those mom out there, have a nice relating Mother’s Day!

Respectfully,

-MR
