Random Thoughts!

Being Debt Free hasn’t had much of a chance to affect me yet!

My sister had a baby, and my wife volunteered to go down and help out for the first week.  We didn’t even get to celebrate paying off the house!  It’s nice being totally debt free, but now for the hard part, I’ve basked in the sun long enough… the honeymoon is over!  I need to develop some new spreadsheets to figure out what I’m going to do.  The spreadsheets will probably be similar to the one in my post about ”My Goal/Dividend Funds“, but I’ll need to create a more ellaborate spreadsheet for the task.

Today, I had my first temptation of Lifestyle Creep!  Our school system has cutbacks, like all of the schools in our area, and one of the cuts was the traditional 4th grade trip.  Well, more involved parents than we are got together, and started trying things to get the money together for the trip.  We really wanted our son to have the experience, so we seriously talked about donating $300 to $400 dollars.  While that might not seem like much money to some of you, for us to contribute so much was unheard of!  Fortunately, we checked with the fundraisers and they said that they thought that they had enough, so we only contributed $100…

I telecommute once a week, and low and behold, the kids had a snow day on that day!  I skipped lunch and left work early to have a bit of outdoor fun with them!  It was great, I even noticed myself running in the snow with our dog a few times.  Lol, what a sight that must have been!  I’m glad my wife didn’t see that!  The kids went sledding down our driveway, with me at the foot of the driveway just in case.  In case of what, I have no idea, the entire time we were sledding, I think I only saw 2 cars slowly creep by…  That’s suburbia for you…

My Favorite Top 5 PF Blogger Posts For The Week:

  •  Eliminate The Muda‘s post  “Combat the Closing Techniques – The Power Of Suggestions - Was a very interesting post about the tactics that salesman use much like Jedi Mind tricks (those are my words not the Coaches) to trick unwary customer into buying more that what the needed or initially wanted by playing into the customer’s ego!
  • Money Honey‘s post  “Grass is Greener on the other side“ – Money Honey has some really great articles this week, ranging from her Las Vegas winnings, to knowing a friend of a friend that won a two million dollar house (this beats my close friend that won a $200,000 dollar house)!   I liked the Grass post because it was simple and honest, but also wrapped with a deeper and often forgotten lesson inside!  I think Financial Samurai‘s friend in Sam’s post called “The Curse Of Making Too Much Money And Not Pursuing Your Dreams” should take heed…  but that just my opinion…
  • Sweating the Big Stuff‘s  “Samurai Alexa Ranking Challenge” spreadsheet is now semi-automated!  I’m always a sucker for a sexy spreadsheet with some great figures!!!  I bet J.Money from BudgetsAreSexy.com has been ogling Daniel-san’s sweet sweet spreadsheet more than once!  Dan’s spreadsheet is a Google app based spreadsheet, and honestly the first time I’ve seen the google spreadsheet being used.  I have to say, I’m very impressed!
  • My Journal to Millions‘s post “Picking Dividend Aristocrat Stocks” – is perfecting his google apps spreadsheet skills too so he can picking the best dividend stocks so he can develop the perfect portfolio of Dividend stocks for the future.  I didn’t realize that Evan and I were pursuing similar paths until his last few blog entries!  After this last market crash, I’ve lost most of my taste for those high beta stocks that I use to passionately follow (well all except maybe BIDU)…
  • Financial Samurai‘s post “Samurai’s Alexa Ranking Challenge Update: Progress Through Adversity” – While this is an update post, what’s great about it is the evolution of a great idea!  Sam (Keiju) is going beyond the initial goal and unselfishly trying to promote all the members of this great group!  Click the above link to discover some of Sam’s newest spins around the entire challenge!  I’m glad to see the Yakezie Buttons are out there too.  I feel that I should beat my first challenge before I put it on my site though.  Kind of like Wayne and Garth’s “I’m not worthy” chant…  I’m hoping by next month end, I, at least, get down to the 200,000 range… maybe 299,000 (maybe I’m being too optimistic though!)… And hopefully in April go for hitting below $200,000…  We’ll see (call me a dreamer)…

My Favorite Post from Money Reasons This Week:

  • My favorite post from my weekly blogging posts is hands down “I Am Debt Free, My Mortgage Countdown #1 – Equilibrium“!  This is a once in a lifetime experience for me (I hope), and surprisingly (at least in my case) a good move.  The Financial pundits were saying how sub par this idea was and that I should be putting the money in the stock market, but they aren’t saying that now!  Of course, I’m fortunate enough not to live in an area where house prices dropped like stones either!  That said, I don’t know if I’d do the same today!!!  Interest rates are pretty low right now!!!

Status on other thing’s I’m involved in:

  • I’m going to learn to program in php and mysql.  I usually work with Microsoft products, but I’ve decided to branch out!  I made some good progress considering all that is going on around me at the moment!  PHP is pretty interesting!
  • My daughter started indoor soccer; she got floored by an 8 year old that weights twice as much as her.  Stupid soccer groups!  I don’t know why 6 year old girls are in the same division as 8 year old boys anyway…

Goal #1: 2010 Resolution #1, Losing Weight While Saving Money – I’ve shelved this until next Month.

Conclusion: Another crazy busy week, I got to play Mr. Mom (this is an 80′s movie that is pretty good actually) for most of this week, and overall I enjoyed it!  Next week will be more stable, no more last night blog postings (yay)!

Random Thoughts:

Being a millionaire doesn’t really make you that much different than the non-millionaire crowd!

Most average millionaires really don’t spend their money like they are worth millions, instead most keep millions in the bank or other investment vehicles as security blankets.  Instead of “living large”, they mostly keep it as an extremely large emergency fund.  Most are a frugal bunch, although every now and they they will splurge (vacations, helping kids with down-payments on houses, etc)!

Personally, if I were a millionaire, I’d travel to places like Hawaii, Europe, the Far East, and … really to a lot of different locations!  Probably for only a few week a year though!  To travel much more than that, would take the excitement out of such trips.

I would also like the luxury of working in any profession that I choose to work in, instead of one that puts food on the table…

My Favorite Top 3 PF Blogger Posts For The Week:

  • ArtofManliness.com‘s post  “The Art of Manliness Podcast Episode #16: Conquering Debt with J.D. Roth of Get Rich Slowly.  This is a podcast interviews J.D. Roth from GetRichSlowly.org, and his struggles with debt.  After listening to the podcast, I started clicking around the site.  I was impressed by it!  It was very interesting!
  • MBABriefs.com‘s post  “Easy ways to improve your memory“ – David continues to hit home runs with his blog posts, most are very high quality!  This is yet another great post by David that impressed me.  Thanks David (once again :) )!!!
  • Monevator’s post  “Pros and cons of being wealthy“ -  This is a great article about those individual/families that are truly rich ($15,000,000 and up).  Once you’re in the millionaire range, the flavor of the having money starts to change a bit.  And while I would still like to be at that 15 million dollar level, an individual does experience diminishing returns in happiness as they continue to make more money above a few million dollars (or so they say, I don’ t personally know any millionaires worth more than 15 million).  This article does a great job weighing those pros and cons.  Although I have to admit, I’m more familiar with “Network Access Storage” version of NAS than then singer that’s referenced in the article!

My Favorite Post From MoneyReasons This Week:

  • My favorite post this week is “10 Millionaire Lifestyle Secrets” which reveals some of the secrets about the average millionaire and their secrets.  Such secrets as they shop at Walmart like us too!  My post is about the 1 or 2 million dollar crowd, not the much more wealthy group (15 million +) that Monevator writes about in his post above.

Status on other thing’s I’m involved in:

  • Next week should be hectic!  I’m with the kids alone for potentially the entire week.  My wife is going down to help out my sister after she had her baby yesterday!
  • I’m going to learn to program in php and mysql.  I usually work with Microsoft products, but I’ve decided to branch out!
  • My son scored points in both of the sports that he is currently play in this week, basketball and soccer.  I’m just typing this line because I’m a proud Daddy and someday if he ever reads this he will know that!

Goal #1: 2010 Resolution #1, Losing Weight While Saving Money – Another subpar week…  I’m building momentum, once I get really mad at myself, I’ll take action.

  Date   Weight/lbs.   Loss/Gain

  02/07/10   231    1

  02/14/10    233   -1

  02/21/10     233    0

  02/28/10

Total Loss for the Month : -1

Conclusion:  Overall this was a decent week!  I had a lot of fun playing “pretend puppy”, checkers, trouble (a board game) or making up stories for story time with my daughter.  My son and I don’t play too much, at least not like I do with my daughter.  I think he will get his turn in summer, when we play golf and basketball (if I lose ever start to lose this weight! grrr).

Week in review:

I joined J.Money’s The Millionaire Club, this is a club for aspiring millionaires to be.  Blogging buddy Jane @ SeeJaneGetRich.com and I went in together.  It’s more fun that way!

For valentines day I took my wife to a Chinese Restaurant that we both like.  The food was great as usually.

I’m tired of clearing my driveway of snow.

My Favorite Top 3 PF Blogger Posts For The Week:

  • ManVSDebt‘s Tyler Durden’s Guide To Personal Finance - This is Jack’s Adam Baker’s financial interpretations of “The Fight Club”.  I think Adam did an awesome job of pulling out some of the best quote from the movie “The Fight Club”.  The only one missing is “Just slide“  which I interprete as just let everything go and do whatever it takes.
  • MBABriefs‘s 5 Ways to be happier – guaranteed - David has produced a list of ways to improve your overall level of happiness on a day to day basis.  Most the the tips that he provides don’t require a lot of addtional work.  So give it a try!
  • Frugal Dad‘s 33 Essential Items For Your Bug Out Bag - This is the list of everything you need if you need to “Bug out” in an emergency…  Very impressive list!

This Week:

  • My favorite post this week is ”The Catch With Winning A Free House” which is a story about my best friend’s Sister (she’s a close friend of mine too) and how after she literally won a brand new house (really a townhouse), she had to deal with the tax consequence.

Status on other thing’s I’m involved in:

  • My stock pick in the ”The Samurai Fundis doing better, In fact it was chosen Forbes Company of the Year.
  • I went to ”Donuts and Dad” with the kids, it’s a nice program.

Update:

I forgot to mention that I’m officially on the map, at ptmoney.com‘s “Map of PF Bloggers“!   I stumbled across it, and it’s actually pretty cool!  It appears to be a google map with various pf bloggers on it.  Definitely worth checking out.

Random Thoughts:

Some people are much luckier than others, I can’t explain it but they are.

Like my friend’s sister who won a house, even to this day I’m still shocked (and jealous, but happy for her) over that one.  I’m one of the slightly unlucky ones, but I know that and have learned to adjust to my type of luck.  It’s almost like it’s a scale…  So to describe my luck, I think that I’m lucky 45% of the time, and unlucky 55% of the time.

Note the following change, I’ve decided to post every other day or so This will give me more time to experiment and read other blogs (which I’ve been doing for years, and is one of my favorite pasttimes).  If you don’t think this is a good idea, please email me at moneyreasons.com [at] gmail [dot] com.

My Favorite Top 3 PF Blogger Posts For The Week:

PF Blogger’s Three Interesting Club To Join (or at least check out):

  • FinancialSamurai.com‘s post  ”Creating Powerful Friends: Samurai’s Alexa Ranking Challenge” - The Financial Shogun Samurai’s club is the one to beat for the ultimate in self-improvement.  By issuing this noble challenge, the financial samurai is encouraging self improvement in the blog world.  Read his post for more information.  (Sam is using the sword instead of carrots as motivators in this challenge ;) ).  sweatingthebigstuff.com has been tracking the progress of the members that are in this club at: “samurai-alexa-ranking-challenge“.
  • Budgetsaresexy.com‘s post  “Millionaire Club - J.Money’s club is for aspiring millionaire’s!  Each member states a pledge that they will use to accomplish there goal.  Sounds like a great idea, and the millionaire club badges is awesome (yes I’m thinking about joining)…
  • WellHeeledBlog.com‘s post  “My Honey, My Money“ - Okay, this is really a club.  It’s a series that WellHeeled has created that takes articles written by others about stories that they want share about money & relationships.  She already has some decent sized blog author’s lined up to submit their stories.  Should be a great read!!!

MoneyReasons Weekly Cache - 2010, Jan 31

 Random Thoughts:

My kids are so different with their finances!

My son constantly wants to spend his money to buy things (mainly Star Wars Lego pieces).  My daughter is totally frugal at age 6.  I asked her why she likes saving so much of her allowance, and she said “I want to save my money in case my family needs it“, needless to say, I was floored hearing this come out of a 5 year old’s mouth (she was 5 when she said this).

I’m just amaze at how different they are…

My Favorite Top 3 PF Blogger Posts For The Week:

  • MBABriefs.com‘s post  ”The definition of FAILURE:”  - In a nutshell, this post is about the learning process.  Many times we hear about the great things our leaders have done, but what we don’t realize is they failed many times before they perfect their contributions to society.  The blog author David does a spectacular job of backing up this post with quality supplemental material that supports his post!
  • SeeJaneGetRich.com‘s post  “Jane & Ideal: First Dinner Party - This is a very funny post between Jane the “actual financial blogger” and Jane the “ideal financial blogger”.  This is an incredible humorous post about the internal struggle between Jane’s efforts to control cost via being frugal versus doing the dinner party the correct way so that it is enjoyable for her guests.  I really enjoyed reading Jane’s new alternative format, plus it’s incredible funny!  Jane definitely hit a home run with this post!!!
  • Eliminatethemuda.com‘s post  “Economists – Capitalists or Socialists?” - After reading this post, Greg made me say “oh really” out loud, in the past I always thought of an economist as a 2nd conservative cousins to math professors.  But Greg points out that they are actually more liberal than conservative.  Click the link to his site and check out his post, it rings true (he also points out some noteworthy considerations!).

My Favorite Post From MoneyReasons This Week:

  • My favorite post this week is my interpretation of Maslow’s hierachy of needs applied to personal finance via My Financial Pyramid.  It’s rough around the edges, but the general base is there…

 Goals Status Update:

Well this year (and this month in particular) is off to a bad start for me.

  • Work has been trying (nuff said…)
  • I missed my monthly target goal this month of losing 9 lbs.
  • My stock pick in the ”The Samurai Fundis down (with the rest of the stock market…)
  • My lottery ticket (the first and last), didn’t win (really big surprise there hehehe)
  • Update: my son has pink eye… (poor guy!)

You might think I’ve turned pessimistic for the year, but I haven’t!  Hopefully it gets better from here on out.

Goal #1: 2010 Resolution #1, Losing Weight While Saving Money

  Date   Weight/lbs.   Loss/Gain

  01/02/10   235   0

  01/09/10   234   1

  01/16/10   232   2

  01/23/10   233
-1

  01/30/10   232   1

Total Loss for the Month : 3

As for my other goals (#2,#3)

  • Not much happening here, I’m starting to organize my work area a bit more.  #3 is well on it’s way, it the only goal I’m happy with.  I’ll probably remove that one soon.  And after I get 2 fully under control, I’ll remove it from this list too.

Next month, February 2010 will be a much more exciting month!  My sister’s having a baby and I’ll have my house paid off.
