Can You Really Trust People Asking for Handouts When They Are Dressed Better Than You?

We had a hectic schedule this past weekend, and our time was limited.  This is why we decided to eat dinner at a city restaurant called “House of Hunan” this past Saturday.

This particular restaurant has 3 other restaurants, and to my suprise, each has a different decor inside (one has a wall of steaming water), but I digress…  We had our meal, which was excellent, and since we dished out of the main plates onto individual plates, we decided to get some boxes to go to share with the people we were visiting!

So, we are now walking on the sidewalk to our car, when I notice a very well dress, and groomed man walking on the sidewalk up ahead coming this way.  I thought to myself, that guys is not in a suite, but based on how he looks, I bet he just put some weekend hours in at one of the offices here in this small city.

He was almost to me (at this point my wife and kids were getting in the car) and proceeded to stop in front of me and told me he was hunger!  Well, the irony was that I had 2 huge boxes of servings from the restaurant…  So I took the top one and said here you can have this, nobody touched this food.  Well, at my offering, he kind of fumble there for a minute and said that he wanted to go up the street to eat?

At this point, my wife and kids were already in the car and we had to go, so I said I’m sorry, but I have to go, bewildered and confused, myself at that point.

Later, I thought about this, I’ve never seen someone looking for a handout that was better dressed, groomed and presented themselves in such a professional manner as this man did.  Today at work, I told one of my buddys and he said it could have been a con.  He said that his Dad told him that he use to see a guy asking for handouts daily at lunch, who would then redress, get in his cadillac and drive to work.  I wonder if this was such a man?

Sometimes life hands out surprises like these that keeps you wondering…  If the man was so hungry, when did he at least consider the box full of food I offered?  I wonder if the man was testing me to see what I would do?  I’ll be thinking about this one, subconsciously, for quite a while!

In this scenario, what would you have done?

The Employment Number, December 2009

Today the employment number comes out, so I’m just going to chill and report the numbers.  My kids are off from School today (snow day), so I’m going to be with them instead of on the web much…

The number is:

-85,000       Drat!

Unemployment rate is still at 10%

I was hoping for a positive number…  Oh well…

That number was for December of 2009 anyway!

Hopefully the stock market will just be down a little bit today (I’m hoping for flat)…

The Warren Buffett & Bill Gates TV Special

Last night didn’t disappoint!  Warren Buffett is such a clever, intelligent speaker! The I was going to comment on the CNBC special last night that I mentioned yesterday, but Financial Samurai beat me to the punch!

Click here for Financial Samurai’s excellent summarization of the tv special that happened last night at 9:00pm ET.

So instead, I thought I’d write a quick list about the reasons I like Warren Buffett:

  • He doesn’t flash around his tremendous wealth.
  • His house isn’t a huge mansion, see the picture below…
  • He live humbly, at least compared to his net worth.
  • He was able to become fairly wealthy at a young age, before he became megarich.
  • He make an incredible boring area (investment) interesting with his witty speeches.
  • He’s a good positive role model for the business community.
  • He give billions to charity, so he’s a great philanthropist.
  • He tries to help the market with his advice.

I admire and respect Warren Buffet so much, that I consider him one of my top 2 financial heroes! Click the link to read more about Warren!

Warren Buffett and Bill Gates Special on CNBC tonight at 9:00pm ET

My top 2 favorite financial heroes are Benjamin Franklin and Warren Buffett!  So when Warren Buffett speaks, I listen…  Bill Gates being there is extra icing on the cake!

Warren Buffett and Bill Gates are the richest people in the world.  So tonight, should be an exciting television event.

Tonight on CNBC, they are going to show a 90 minute special with Warren Buffet and Bill Gates at 9:00pm ET.

Warren Buffet (like Benjamin Franklin) is an enticing speaker, adding charisma, folksy charm, intelligence and humor to his easy coming but brilliant comments and speeches.

Bill Gates (obviously incredible intelligent), is more reserved.  He, like Warren, is a great philanthropist.  He speaks well too considering he is somewhat reserved.

Whenever you have the 2 richest individuals in the world talk about the economy, I think it’s something that shouldn’t be missed.

I hope it’s worth the wait! 😀
