5 Cheap Ways To Escape From Stress

April 30th, 2011

Today, I’m going to reveal some of my favorite ways to reduce stress while keeping it cheap!

Relaxing at the Park

Relaxing at the Park

Cheap Ways To Escape From Stress

  • At lunch, I go to a small quiet library.  The library that I go to is my intraday escape!  I’m luck because the library is usually empty at lunch.  Before I started blogging, I would go there to check out the newest DVD movies and read the newspapers and magazines.  Occasionally, I would even take a quick 10 to 15 minute nap.  Or if the weather was nice, and I was tired, I would park beneath a tree and take a 30 minute nap.
  • Visit the numerous parks in the area.  There are plenty of walking park to visit in the area.  At this one park close to work, they have a small pond with a fountain in the middle.  I would just sit on a bench in the shade, and close my eyes and just listen to the fountain noise.  At the same park, if I was very tired, again I would take a 30 minute nap in the parking lot.
  • Visit the bird park.  This park is 15 minutes away, so I had to pack my lunch the day before, then drive to the park and while I was there, eat quickly.  The bird part is actually inside a building that is built into a hill.  The birds are on the outside where there are feeders and a microphone system so we could listen to the bird sounds.
  • Walk around my neighborhood block late at night.  I use to do my best thinking at these times, not to mention a little bit of exercise.  I’m lucky in that the streets at night are empty and quiet.
  • Lounging/sitting on my deck at night when the stars are out in full force while listening to music on my mp3 player.  At night and at dusk are my favorite time to relax on my deck.  Before I built the deck, I would get a chair and sit out in the driveway at night looking at the stars (star gaze).

These are the 5 quick, cheap and easy ways I relieve stress.  Sometimes I take my dog on my walks and let her come out onto the deck with me.  She’s quiet for the most part and doesn’t bother me in my de-stressing periods.

How do you relieve stress?

Sometimes It Takes More Than One To Believe

April 29th, 2011

I’m watching the movie *Cyrus as I type this post, and there is this scene where the main character is at a party (he’s a bit tipsy), and he starts singing a song that’s on the radio.  He jumping and dancing with enthusiasm and vigor, singing the song and displaying an almost teenage level of energy.

He tries to get others involved, but they just look at him like he’s crazy…  He starts to get quieter and depressed, but then Marisa Tomei decides to dance and sing with him too.  At that point the main character gets twice the energy, and recruits others to join in the fun too.  After another few minutes, everybody in the house is dancing!

The movie Elf has a similar moment, where Zooey Deschanel provides a turning point in the movie.

So is this yet another movie fairytale that some writers concocted that isn’t very realistic?

Surprisingly no, if you have the support of a spouse, good friend(s) or even the support of a group you can do incredible things!

The most memorable moment for me was when I was in my first and only tae kwon do tournament.  I was down by two point and seemed destined to lose the final match of the tournament, then all my dojo practitioners came over and started cheering me on.  Like the typical fairytale, that cheering gave me the extra rush of adrenaline that I needed to catch up and beat my opponent.  This enabled me to win my division and take home a huge trophy.

Another example is this link to an awesome video of Elizabeth Hughes singing the National Anthem singing when her mic goes out.  She was singing spectacularly, and the crowd couldn’t let it end that way, so everybody started singing to support her and finish the song!  It was a powerful experience just watching the video, and I’m sure it was even more powerful being there.

Sometimes to accomplish great things, you may need the support of others, whether it’s friends, girlfriends/boyfriends, spouses or just someone to believe in you and your ideas..

*The movie Cyrus was just okay, but I did like the particular scene above…

The Three Little Financial Pigs: Pig #2 Update

April 28th, 2011

A few days ago, I talked about my friend that represents Pig #1.  Today I’m going to talk about my other friend that represents Pig #2.

Pig 2

If you are new to this storyline, the basis of all three little financial pigs are two of my childhood friends, and myself.  I blog about each of their stories in the original articles listed below:

Pig #2 of The Three Little Financial Pigs

This little pig of the three little pigs, has done extremely well lately.  In my initial story of Pig #2, I state that he was living like he was still in college.  That mindset has changed for the better.  Now he spend more time with his kids by coaching and planning special frugal vacation (camping mainly), with just them.

While it’s obvious that he’s a better father, what impressed me the most was how in the past year he has become much more financially savvy!  Lately, he’s been talking of selling his boat because of gas prices and how it’s a money pit.

He stopped leasing cars a while ago, but I though he’d be flipping to a new car every 2 years like he had done in the past.   But to my surprise, he’s stuck with the ones he bought 4 or 5 years ago.  He’s actually stoked that they are almost totally paid off.  Now he’s constantly talking about saving his money and frugal deals that he finds.

Pig #2 has always rode the trends closely though, so perhaps this is just his attempt to ride the currently popular frugal wave that the US is experiencing.  Afterall, it’s cool to be frugal now, at least for now it is…

I’d say that even though my friend puts on a good front, that he’s still on the same level as the original storyline Pig #2, or perhaps a quarter closer to Pig #3 level.  We’ll see…

If he does continue to be frugal and starts investing his money, he may become financially independent in 20 to 30 years.

Whether he is just riding the current tend of frugality or not, it’s impressive the changes he has made!  Again, I’m very impressed with his progress!

Everything Goes Trash Night is Like Bizarro Christmas

April 27th, 2011
Bizarro Santa

Bizarro Santa

Today is almost like a holiday for me!  It’s the only day of the year that I do a bizzarro twist in my trash routine and actually look forward to taking the trash out!

You see, in my city, once a year the city will pick up anything that doesn’t fix in the trashcan.  On this day it’s much like the Bizarro Christmas…

The conversations goes as follows…  this toy can go, that toy is broked, goodbye Mean Greenlawnmower, broken sled, old basketball hoop and broken kite!

It’s a balance, I don’t want to throw everything away, and actually some things were saved by my daughter…  Hello old yucky kitchen set that my daughter still wants, hello old but-still-in-decent-shape bike that my son want to give to Goodwill.

Everything Goes Trash night is a busy night for tinkerers!  For they play the role of bizarro Santa during this fine reverse Christmas day!

As my wife was sitting in our bedroom, she heard a noisy truck than made such a clatter (the noise woke up my son too).  With the TV and lights turned off in both bedrooms, my wife and son in parallel watch as a man in a old red sleigh pickup truck take “Mean Green” (my old broken lawnmower) away.

As I stopped to watch too, I feel guilty knowing that “Mean Green” was pretty busted up and even missing a handle.  But that doesn’t stop the tinkerer man, he goes right to work and heaves it onto his truck bed much like Santa does with a bag full of toys as he put them on his red sleigh.  The tinkerer didn’t look up and went right to work, shifting his truck to run as it took off with a noisy jerk!  I start to wonder if we should have left cookies and milk…

As I’m typing this I can hear the tinkerer’s truck on other stops in the neighborhood.  the clanging of other mechanical things onto his truck (which was actually pretty full when he took my lawnmower).

You might think that I’m making fun of this man (the tinkerer), but actually, I think he’s awesome and here’s why:

  1. The tinkerer will try to make something that will work out of the mechanical trash that he collects (but probably not “Mean Green”, because it was very busted up).
  2. The parts that doesn’t work may be recycled as he takes the metal chassis and other pieces of such very broken machines to a metal recycling center.  To make money of course!
  3. By salvaging these machines, he is keeping money in the economic system.  When the pieces go to the junkyard, these machines/materials leave the economic system.  So he is in his own way helping the enconomy.  Betcha didn’t see that one coming!
  4. Obviously, the machines he takes partially won’t go to the landfill and this is a very green activity.

So I really like this special day because I get rid of our oddball and large broken trash, but it’s also a very green day with tickerers coming out to save the day!

Bests,

The Three Little Financial Pigs Update: Pig #1

April 26th, 2011

Pig #1 of The Three Little Financial Pigs

Pig 1

Pig 1

In the past, using two childhood friends and myself as examples, I compared the three of us to one of my favorite childhood stories, “The Three Little Pigs“.

Of course I put a different spin on the story, to make a financial comparison of our lives.  I really enjoyed writing the stories of the three financial types that my friends and I represented so I thought I’d provide an update on the three of us (in this article, it’s Pig #1), if you haven’t read the original stories, check them out too…

Little Pig #1 Update:

Many consider Pig #1 to be the most interesting of the lot of us, since he was once a VP at a few large companies (read his story called: The Three Little Pigs, Pig #1).  For a while, he lived high on the hog (pun intended), owning a Mercedes and every year going on fancy vacations and hosting elaborate parties.  However, when hard times hit, his family had to live in his brother’s basement when he lost his job.

He made enough money in his prime, that he would have easily been a millionaire if he invested the money he made instead of spending it like he did.  The fault isn’t totally his fault, he picked a spendthrift spouse that definitely hurt their financial position too.  Please note, a frugal or realistic spouse is very important in wealth accumulation!

Today, Pig #1 is doing much better!  He found a new girlfriend that has more common sense and is a better person all around.

He also got a new job (right before his unemployment benefits were to run out)!  It’s not a VP position, but he does head up a division as a director.  From what he has told me, he’s already impressing the top brass.  This doesn’t surprise me, he’s top-notch in the quality of work he performs.  Too bad he doens’t employ the same vigor with his finances.

I regret to say that although he is better off today, I fear that his new girlfriend (while much better) also like to spend money freely and quickly.  I’m sure they will be in a better position than he was previously, but I don’t see him every becoming truly wealthy from a financial sense.

So while he has improved, and I don’t see him every moving back into his brother’s basement, I don’t see him becoming financially independent either.  The house his parents bought for him will at least provide him a decent base to cling to.

As for his status, I’d say that he’s beyond being a solid Pig #1!  I think he’s more half way between the Pig #1 and Pig #2 types now!

Here’s to wishing him the best!
