Losing Weight Frugally?

I’m down over 20 pounds to date.

It’s been a hard time losing weight because I’ve been sick with vertigo like symptoms for the past month.  Even so, I’ve still manage to lose at least 5 more pounds since my symptoms started.

So the question is: “Am I Losing Weight Frugally“?  After all this was and still is part of my goal!

The answer is: “Yes“, but I’m not doing it as frugally as I had hoped that I would.

I started out being very frugal, eating both very healthy and inexpensive foods like eggs, peanuts, cheese and broccoli.  And those worked out well at first, but eventually they got boring.  So I decided to spice it up with some grilled hamburger, and that was a good and welcome change, but that got old too.  So that’s when I started cooking salmon burgers!  Good but on the pricey side, but to make matters worse I started craving chocolate, and I bought some Atkin’s low carb bars (peanut butter and chocolate crisps).  Those last two were getting on the pricier side, especially when I went through the Atkin’s bars in two days (the box cost about $6.00).  The salmon is very heathy for you but the chocolate bars isn’t but at least it’s crunchy!

Actually I’ve been craving fish a lot lately, and too much tuna isn’t good for you…  Oh Well…

I’ve made the eggs less boring by warning up my eggs in the microwave (be carefully since they will explode if you aren’t careful!).  Of course I remove the shell first and only have the egg in for a few seconds (just enough to take the chill off and give them some warmth!  It’s not great, but it’s better than cold hard-boiled eggs.

So if you have any tips, for low carb foods, please comment!  I need to keep myself in check from a cost perspective!

Cheers,

MR

P.S. Remember to take a good vitamin while you are on a low carb diet.  It slipped my mind this last time!

  1. 80% of weight is your diet and the other 20% is activity. I am losing/controlling my weight by walking 20-30 minutes every day. It is virtually free!

    • Someday I’ll get to that point, I’ve lost enough weight that I feel comfortable being more active! I’ll probably rope my son into doing exercises with me too.

  2. I’m the same way with food. I get bored of stuff if I eat it too regularly. So to stick to a diet like that I need a lot of variety. I’d mix some chicken breast meals into your meal plan. They’re great for protein and very healthy. 20 lbs lost is awesome progress though. Nice work!

  3. Grilled chicken, egg whites, and other high protein/low carb choices seem to work well. I think a couple of keys to losing weight are avoiding “white carbs” and making sure that you don’t go too long between meals before eating.

  4. Congrats on your weight loss success! That’s fabulous!

At the end of last year, I lost about 22 lbs. It wasn’t too frugal a venture for me, but it was worth it !

    • it’s worth the money to lose that weight! There are too many health issues associated with having too much weight on your body. That one of the biggest reasons, please I don’t enjoy my life as much being heavy, it slow me down in too many way.s

  5. Frugality always seems to get me in trouble while dieting. A Large fries is a much better value than a small etc. I think you’re doing a good job, just don’t let it get out of control. Spending on an important goal such as healthy eating and weight loss is worth it if you can afford it.

    • This is going to sound like I’m dissing you, but I’m not, honest! And here is what I’ve found after years of doing that same actions…

When you buy the supersize, it just is stored as fat in your body (at least with mine), so I no longer go for something that is high caloric foods. That said I do still buy the larger (more value for the dollar sizes) drinks that have are diet. At least as long as there isn’t free refills, if there are free refills, I buy the smallest cup 🙂

It took me a long time to realize that even if the larger size is more of a value from a cost perspective, from a health perspective it’s much more expensive! I never go to all-you-can-eat places anymore either (unless it’s a salad bar).

  6. Even though a previous commenter said that weight loss is 80% diet, for me it’s almost the opposite. When I get back into sports like mountain biking, the last thing I crave before or after a hard ride is something fatty. When I’m the most lethargic, that is when I crave the junk.

So I’d say, try being more active and see if the bad food cravings go away.

Congrats. That is quite the achievement. I remember losing 7 pounds a few years back seemed like a momentous task.

    • Sometimes if I’m busy I do forget about food, especially if I’m having a great time!

I’m hoping to lose another slow 20 pounds. Slow because once I start working out muscle growth will naturally happen and slow the weight lost (from a scale perspective) down. It’ll still be good though!

  7. I am doing the Insanity workout. I blog about it and have seen an increase in adsense. Once I am done I will sell the set and end up making money on the deal. Plus I am from page for insanity before and after.

  8. Way to go on that 20lbs! That’s great 🙂 A good vitamin is so important. For me I think it’s what keeps me going through the day. I actually take one that you use twice daily just to avoid that afternoon crash and make sure I’m getting everything I need 🙂 I like the trend of all of the Yakezie bloggers getting into fitness and tracking on their sites. It’s really awesome – I think I might post my progress as well soon

    • I’m a little behind where I want to be, but at least I’m still losing. It’s a good year to be in shape 🙂

  9. Well done on the diet, MR.
Physical activity is the best complement to a weight loss shift in diet. A drastic change like this, especially with a low-carb Atkins, is easier to stick with if the table fare is varied.
Tuna salad, with garlic and cherry tomatoes and dressed w/ mayo. Or white tuna tossed with olive oil and shallots. Good stuff.
Thin steaks can be done a number of ways, say with green peppers and cheese and onions for a philly cheese steak-ish combinations, or with fajita seasonings.
Lots of green salads with feta cheese.
    Olives.
Fruit salads of strawberry and blackberries, dressed with a little heavy whipping cream.
Hard to think of eggs as boring. We buy wonderful farm-fresh eggs with great orange yolks. A quick frittata in an iron skillet with mozzarella or parmesan cheese is a great breakfast.
Lastly, recommend going on Mark Sisson’s site The Daily Apple for some menu suggestions.

  10. Congrats on the 20 pounds!!!

Let’s see, my favorite foods on Weight Watchers were cherry sugar-free jello, low sugar Jello chocolate pudding, turkey burgers (maybe a ground turkey casserole with low fat cheese), ham and cheese together (like slices but not on crackers), grilled chicken slices on salad, etc.

Our favorite chicken rub is simply salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and some lemon juice or lemon zest. Grill on each side for 8-10 minutes. Yummy with any side – we liked putting salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic in the frozen green beans too.

    • grilled chicken slices on salad is one of my favorite!

I’ve been ignoring “ham”, but now that you mentioned ham and cheese together, I’ll have to try that out too!

Thanks for all the great ideas!!!

  11. I love grilled veggies and stir fried veggies. You can throw virtually any veggie into the mix. Some of the better grilled veggies (in my opinion) are: romaine lettuce, asparagus and mushrooms. In stir fries, I use anything, but I like carrots, green beans, celery, sugar snap peas and cherry tomatoes.

  12. Congrats on the weight loss! I also lost over 20lbs by staying away from processed or prepackaged foods. We grill a lot of chicken and veggies. Going to the gym definitely helped too (My gym membership is only $10/month by the way)
