My 2011 Summer Vacation Review

Summer Vacation Review Part 1

First we stayed in Hilton Grand Vacation Suites at SeaWorld, and while it was an older hotel, it was still pretty nice.  What was really great though was that across the street was the SeaWorld parking lot!  Talk about close to the action!

SeaWorld wasn’t exciting for me, but I grew up with it…  But my kids loved it, and my daughter said it was the best vacation ever for her (she loved dolphins and orcas).

Next we went to Discovery Cove with was just a little further down the street from our hotel too!  We loved being so close to the action and even at a good price too since the hotel was only about $130 a night!

Discovery Cove was a good resort and fun.  They put some time into making it look cool, and the kids loved it.  It’s the dolphin ride that they will both remember though.  I’m glad I have it on film!

Summer Vacation Review Part 2

The Captiva Island (a sister island to Sanibel Island) part of our vacation we very interesting and went at a much slower pace, and by slower…  I mean really slow!

The island was beautiful and the sunset was awesome, but restaurants close on Sunday!?!  Yep, that’s right, the restaurants are closed on Sunday!  We had to drive to Sanibel Island to find an open restaurant.  During the weekdays, the restaurants and bars close after 11:00pm!  This is a far cry from Myrtle Beach!

My son didn’t get stung by any jellyfish this year, but he didn’t go very deep into the ocean either though.

The highlight of the vacation for me was just hanging out with friends and family, chilling by the pool and watching the sunset go down!

My vacation is coming to a conclusion, soon I’ll be back to my normal middle class lifestyle.

But it was a great time all around!

  1. I love beach vacation. It sounds like you had some great family time. This year we’re not taking any long vacation since the baby is so young. Next year we’ll take a road trip to CA. 🙂

    • We’ve been going to the beach for our main summer vacation for quite a while now. I think I’m starting to get beached out…

We were the same way with our kids, it’s just not safe enough on the roads to drive when the babies are too young!!!

  2. Relaxing on vacation is a welcome treat. When I get a week of just kicking back, the value is often realized when I return feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Did you get to swim with the dolphins or no?

    • It was nice but went too quickly!

I decided not to swim with the dolphins this time. I’ve been thinking if we make it to Hawaii someday, that perhaps I’ll go then.

I was very happy to film the kid’s adventure though!

  3. It sounds like you had a great vacation this summer. I like the sound of a sleepy island. Were there bike rentals available? The one part about the old Jaws movie I love (I’m only thinking about Jaws because of the jellyfish thing) is the opening when all the people are exciting the ferry with their bikes. Biking around an island would seem easier than driving.

    • There were bikes on Captiva, but we decided to drive to Sanibel and ride bikes over there for 4 hours instead. I was awesome!

Sharks didn’t scare me so much as the thought of stingrays did.

  4. My girlfriend wasn’t a fan of Sea World — and I wasn’t too stoked about it either. But, I’m glad your kids had a great time! I bet it is more fun to take kids to a place like that–especially since it IS marketed to kiddos. I just wasn’t a fan of all the “save the animals” jargon. It got on my nerves after awhile.

    • I know what you mean. Any more it’s almost like they are trying to brainwash us… I like the animals (dolphins and orcas), but I’m not really amazed by the shows. Still my young kids enjoy it so it’s all good…

  5. Glad to hear you had a great vacation and that you got the dolphin moments on video! I could use some laid back island beach time right about now. -Sydney 🙂
